Philip Melanchthon (1497–1560), the German humanist scholar who worked alongside Martin Luther at Wittenberg, is the subject here, and his reputation rests on his Greek scholarship, his school and university reforms, and his drafting of the Augsburg Confession in 1530. The record dates this print to about 1833, roughly three centuries after his death, so it most likely reproduces an earlier likeness rather than a portrait made from life. The name Hoffay, A.A., taken from a catalog card, is not verified.
