Rather than a plain portrait, *Ornithology* sets Democrat Franklin Pierce and Whig general Winfield Scott, the two men who faced each other in the 1852 presidential race, under a title borrowed from the study of birds. The print is signed with the monogram of Edward Williams Clay, a Philadelphia caricaturist whose satirical lithographs were widely sold in the 1840s and 1850s, and it was published in New York by John Childs. Pierce won that November's election, so the print is a snapshot of a campaign whose outcome was not yet known. Its bird-themed title reflects how often American political cartoons of the period used animal comparisons to mock candidates.
