Labeled a view on the lower Mississippi, this color lithograph ties its bright palette to the cotton country along the river. Registered for copyright around 1883, it reflects a period when "Sunny South" was a popular phrase for the postbellum region, and such pictures often presented plantation work as idyllic even as sharecropping was reshaping Black labor there. Its subject headings point to cotton plantations and African American employment, so it is worth reading as a commercial image that shows its audience's view of the South as much as the conditions it depicted.
