St. Philip, one of the twelve apostles, is the subject here, shown in an oil painting by Cristóbal de Villalpando. Villalpando was among the leading painters working in New Spain in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, and his religious canvases combine Baroque composition with a distinctly Mexican colonial character. This photographic print records the canvas as it hangs in the Museo de Querétaro, in the city of Querétaro, so it documents the painting rather than an original work by the print's maker. The caption card gives no date, so the print's age is unknown, though reproductions like this were often made to bring church art to wider audiences.
