A photograph of an anonymous Mexican painting, this image shows Saint Anthony Abbot, the Egyptian hermit of the third and fourth centuries often called the father of Christian monasticism. Painters in colonial Mexico returned often to his story of solitude and resistance to demonic temptation in the desert, and he is commonly shown with attributes such as a tau-shaped staff, a bell, and a small pig at his side. The accompanying catalog card gives no date, and its attributions are unconfirmed, so the painting's age and maker remain uncertain. Sylvia Weyl's photograph still preserves the composition for those studying religious art in Mexico.
