Anne Bonny, the Irish-born pirate shown here, sailed with Calico Jack Rackham in the Caribbean around 1720, and she and fellow crewmember Mary Read were among the few women of the era known to have taken part in piracy. This print is an illustration from a 1962 Folio Society edition of Captain Charles Johnson's pirate biographies, first published in 1724, which remains a major source for what is known about figures like Bonny. Johnson's accounts mix documented court records with dramatic embellishment, so the image reflects how readers of the eighteenth and twentieth centuries imagined a woman outlaw at sea.
