A narrow close at No. 46 Saltmarket is the subject here, with the caption card tagging children, carts, and slums, which places the scene in one of the crowded old lanes of Glasgow's center. Thomas Annan made the picture as a woodburytype, a process that reproduces continuous tone and was well suited to book illustration. It appeared in *Old Glasgow*, published for the Glasgow City Improvement Trust around 1878 or 1879, when the Trust was clearing overcrowded buildings from the old town. Annan's photographs recorded these streets before they were demolished, so the view now stands as a record of a neighborhood that did not last.
