The name on this 1896 glass negative belongs to Onaway, a small village in northern Michigan's Lower Peninsula. The title points to its origin: Henry Wadsworth Longfellow used "Onaway" as a call meaning "awake" in *The Song of Hiawatha* (1855). The record attributes the picture to the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that documented towns, resorts, and scenery across the country in the 1890s and early 1900s, but that attribution rests on the style of the title and numbering rather than a company number. The 8 by 10 inch plate reached the Library of Congress as a gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949.
