Titled simply "Rival," this 8 by 10 inch glass negative is dated July 12, 1890, but its record does not describe the scene, so the title is the only clue to its subject, suggesting a contest between two people, animals, or machines. The maker is an attribution based on the style of the title and numbering rather than a signed credit, a reminder that many views from this period left no record of who made them. Glass plates of this size were a common working format for photographers of the 1890s, and the plate's place in the Detroit Publishing Company collection, now held by the Library of Congress, keeps it available for study.
