Blankenberghe, the Belgian North Sea resort named in the title, was a fashionable bathing town by the late 1800s, drawing visitors by rail from Brussels and other cities. The photochrom process behind this print was an early method of color printing, which built each image from several separately prepared printing layers. It comes from the Detroit Publishing Company's Belgian views, issued as catalog number 8746 around 1905, while the original photograph is dated between about 1890 and 1900. The beach scene reflects the leisurely seaside culture that shaped many coastal towns of the period.
