Isabel Bishop's etching "At the Noon Hour" (1935) catches a small, ordinary break in the working day: young women stepping out into the city to eat, talk, and stretch their legs. Bishop, a New York painter and printmaker, made her reputation by drawing office workers and shop girls in the Union Square area, and her figures here have a quiet, self-possessed look that sets them apart from the more sentimental city scenes of the period. The print appeared during the Depression, when many women took paid office and clerical jobs and their clothing signaled both their place in the working world and their own sense of style. Worth noticing are the hats, coats, and tailored dresses, which tell you as much about the wearers' lives as the setting does.
