Set apart by its format, this picture is a stereograph card issued by the Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, a firm known for mass-producing stereoviews in the early twentieth century. Its two nearly identical photographs merge into a single three-dimensional scene when viewed through a stereoscope, so a first-grade story hour seems to unfold just beyond the viewer's hands. Stereoviews like this were sold widely in the 1920s and were prized for both home entertainment and their glimpses of ordinary school life, including how teachers gathered young children around a book.
