This 1936 silkscreen poster advertises a toy sale and bears the sponsorship of the Federal theater Project, a Depression-era program that employed theater workers across the country. The Federal Art Project's poster division used silkscreen printing to make inexpensive, brightly colored posters for public events, and this sheet shows that method at work. A date stamp on the back, March 21, 1941, shows the poster was still being handled and dated five years after it was printed. Its subject, toys sold in New York State, reflects the economic hardship of the period, when many families stretched their budgets for holiday gifts.
