Advertising a hilarious comedy about backstage life, this 1936 poster promotes *A Touch of Brimstone* under the banner of the Federal theater Project. That New Deal program, part of the Works Progress Administration, was created to put actors, directors and stagehands back to work during the Depression, and its California units staged productions across the state. The poster was printed by silkscreen, a stencil method the WPA's poster workshops used to produce bold, flat color affordably in large runs. Its subject headings also point to the period's interest in relations between the sexes, a common comic theme of the day.
