Advertising a revue called *Federal Varieties*, this silkscreen poster promises forty stage, radio and screen stars, a bold claim for a show put on by a government theater program. The Federal theater Project was one of the arts divisions of the Works Progress Administration, launched in 1935 to employ actors, writers and stagehands during the Depression. Its New York unit sponsored productions ranging from serious plays to lighter variety entertainments like this one. The poster reflects the WPA poster units' use of silkscreen, which allowed flat areas of strong color to be printed cheaply in large numbers.
