The poster's slogan, "They like winter in New York State," frames winter as a reason to visit, and its skiing subject shows the state promoting its snowy landscapes to travelers. It was produced by the Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, and sponsored by the state's Bureau of State Publicity in the Conservation Department. During the late 1930s, the WPA employed artists to make inexpensive color silkscreen posters for public agencies, and tourism promotion was one of their common assignments. Looking at it now, the flat shapes and bold color blocks of the silkscreen technique are as much a part of its appeal as the message.
