This silkscreen poster announces the opening of the first foreign trade zone in the United States, on Staten Island in New York City, which opened in February 1937. Inside such a zone, imported goods could be stored, handled, and reshipped without paying customs duties until they entered the domestic market, a practical aim during the economic strain of the Depression. The poster was produced under the Works Progress Administration's federal art program, which hired artists to make public notices, and its stacks and shipping imagery mark the port's industrial work. A date stamp on the back records January 1938, roughly a year after the zone opened.
