This silkscreen poster advertises *Haiti*, a 1938 drama by W. E. B. Du Bois about Toussaint Louverture, the leader the title calls "the black Napoleon." The Federal theater Project, a New Deal program that employed theater workers during the Depression, staged the production with a New York cast, and the subject headings point to Boston as one of its venues. Louverture led the uprising of enslaved people in Saint-Domingue against French rule in the 1790s, and that struggle helped lead to Haitian independence in 1804.
