Few WPA theater posters name a town as specifically as this one does: the Federal theater Project advertised Jean Bart's drama of romantic Spain in Colton, California, in 1937. The Federal theater Project was one of the arts programs of the Works Progress Administration, created to put actors, directors and stagehands back to work during the Depression and to bring plays to audiences far from big-city stages. Its poster units printed advertisements in silkscreen, a method that used flat, bold areas of color and could produce many copies cheaply. Bart died in 1933, so this production was staged several years after his death.
