This 1936 silkscreen poster advertises a stage production sponsored by the Federal theater Project, a New Deal program that employed actors, directors, and stagehands after the Depression hit commercial theater. The Project's California units staged plays in cities including Los Angeles and San Francisco, and the WPA's poster division produced silkscreen prints like this one in large runs, using flat areas of bold color that were cheap to reproduce and easy to read from a street corner. Posters like this one were one of the main ways the Project reached audiences who had little money for tickets.
