This 1936 silkscreen poster advertises a Los Angeles staging of two Shakespeare plays, *The Winter's Tale* and *A Midsummer Night's Dream*, in shortened "streamlined" versions. The Federal theater Project, a branch of the Works Progress Administration, sponsored the productions to employ theater workers during the Great Depression and to bring classic drama to audiences who could not usually afford it. Its posters were made by WPA artists using silkscreen, a method that allowed bold flat areas of color and large runs at low cost. The poster is a useful record of how the government put artists and actors to work during those years.
