A young girl in round spectacles, a bonnet, and a long apron stands beside a washboard and a tub, dressed to play at the household laundry. The print was copyrighted around 1898 by M.B. Parkinson of New York, and its title was supplied by Library staff. Washing clothes by hand was one of the heaviest weekly chores in American homes of the period, so pictures like this one show children imitating adult work, a popular theme in late nineteenth-century photography. The image was later shown in the American ABC exhibition at the Cantor Center for Visual Arts.
