Few details survive for this glass negative, but its title, "71st entraining," points to soldiers of the 71st, a New York National Guard infantry regiment, boarding a train. The title comes from notes made by the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency whose pictures were sold to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Guard regiments were moved by rail during the 1916 border crisis with Mexico and again when the United States entered World War I in 1917, so a scene like this captures the fast, rail-borne mobilization of citizen soldiers.
