Locomotive No. 124 sits squarely at the mouth of a tunnel, its boiler and smokestack framed by the dark arch of the cut. The caption, which the record flags as unverified, places the scene in a canyon it spells "Temaposa." Photographer William Henry Jackson made a series of railroad views in Mexico during the 1880s and 1890s, when the Mexican Central and related lines pushed through steep mountain terrain that required tunnels, cuttings, and trestles. Images like this one were often used to promote the lines' engineering and to document the new routes.
