The caption names this engine as the first locomotive of a United States railroad, and the subject tags place it in Alaska, where federal rail construction began in the early 1900s and accelerated after 1915. Such machines were often the first working proof that a remote line could be built and run, hauling men, supplies, and timber through country with few roads. The photograph was made by a photographer named Pyatt and later came to the Library of Congress as part of the Frank and Frances Carpenter collection. Its date range, roughly 1900 to 1930, spans the years when Alaska's interior was being opened by rail.
