Honesdale, Pennsylvania, is the setting for this scene from August 8, 1829, when the *Stourbridge Lion* made its trial run for the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company. Built in England, the engine was among the first steam locomotives to run in the United States, and the company had brought it in to haul coal. Clyde O. DeLand's painting, reproduced here around 1916, centers on the crowd of spectators who gathered to watch it. The locomotive proved too heavy for the track and saw little use after its trial.
