A steam locomotive stands on the tracks of a railroad yard, its boiler, smokestack and cab dominating the frame while the rail lines recede behind it. Yards like this one were the working heart of the railroad system, where engines were coupled to freight cars, serviced with coal and water, and routed onto the right sidings for the next leg of a journey. Steam locomotives of this kind carried much of the nation's freight and passengers through the late 1800s and early 1900s, and their scale against the surrounding tracks and buildings is what makes a picture like this worth a second look.
