Two crossbuck signs stand at the edge of a rural road where it meets the tracks, with wooded mountains rising behind them. The railroad crossing sign, with its X-shaped crossbuck posts, was a common feature of American roads by the early 20th century, when rail lines ran through many small towns and valleys. Scenes like this one show how the road and the rail line shared the same ground, and how the crossing was marked for drivers coming over the tracks.
