A heavily loaded logging train crosses a timber trestle in Oregon's Cascade Mountains, its cars stacked with logs far larger than the rolling stock would suggest. Around 1906, logging railroads were pushing deep into these forests to reach stands of Douglas fir and other large conifers, and trestles let trains span ravines and creeks that would otherwise have halted a line. The picture was issued as a stereograph, a pair of nearly identical photographs on card that a viewer saw as one three-dimensional scene through a stereoscope. The card is credited to C.L. Wasson, and such views were commonly sold to a public eager to see the West.
