A 4-4-0 steam locomotive, distinguished here by the eagle emblem mounted on its tender, is the focus of this lithograph. The 4-4-0 wheel arrangement, with a four-wheel leading truck, two driving axles and a trailing axle, was the most common American passenger type of the mid-to-late 1800s, and it was the workhorse of railroads crossing a rapidly expanding country. Prints like this one were often made to advertise a railroad or to celebrate the machines that were tying the nation together. The eagle, a common national symbol, suggests the locomotive was presented with patriotic pride as well as mechanical pride.
