Overgrown rail yards like the one in this picture were a familiar sight across America once the steam era wound down. A locomotive and a line of ore wagons left to sit while brush and small trees closed in around them show how quickly a working rail spur could fall silent. Ore cars of this kind hauled iron and other mineral loads from mines to smelters and docks, so their presence here points to a branch line that had outlived its purpose. Photographers of the period often returned to scenes like this one, drawn by the contrast between heavy machinery and the reclaiming land around it.
