Its title points to an American locomotive fitted with a cow catcher, the wedge-shaped iron frame on the front of the engine that cleared livestock and debris from the track. The wood engraving appeared in *The Graphic*, a London illustrated weekly, on October 11, 1873, when British readers were often curious about American railroads and their differences from home-built engines. The catcher's blunt, forward-projecting shape is the detail worth noticing, since it became a familiar emblem of the American railroad.
