Few details survive for this watercolor beyond its title and its 1911 date. The record credits the drawing only to R. Loewy, so its interest lies mostly in the subject itself. Around 1911 the steam locomotive was at the height of its role in American life, pulling passenger and freight trains over a rail network that was approaching its largest extent. Artists of the period often painted engines with close attention to their mechanical parts, and a drawing like this shows how contemporaries saw these machines.
