A locomotive built for the Manitou and Pike's Peak Railroad in Colorado anchors this engraving. The line used a toothed rack rail laid between the running rails, which let its engines haul trains up the steep grade toward the summit of Pikes Peak. The railway opened in 1891. The print was published as an illustration in a travel book, and its caption card gives no date, so it is best read as a record of the railway's early promotion and machinery rather than a precise moment in time.
