This view shows the Spruce Creek Tunnel, which the record places 215 miles from Philadelphia on the Pennsylvania Railroad's main line. The line ran west through central Pennsylvania, and its tunnels and cuts were among the engineering features that drew attention in the 1870s, when the railroad was one of the country's largest carriers. The print was published as an illustration in the *National Album*, a Philadelphia publication from 1874, which suggests it was made for a readership interested in the nation's growing rail network. Its date is an estimate, so the 1874 album appearance is the firmest point of reference.
