Soldiers settling into the berths of a Pullman sleeping car make this one stand out from the many railroad images in the collection. The Pullman Company, the largest operator of sleeping cars in the United States, appears to have made the photograph around 1942, the date given with a question mark in the record. By then, the nation's railroads were carrying enormous numbers of troops, and sleeping cars were a familiar sight on long wartime journeys. The picture offers a candid look at the cramped, everyday routines of traveling men during the war.
