A wrecked Pennsylvania Railroad car lies on the tracks in this glass negative, with its damage the clear focus of the frame. The record dates it to October 6, 1909, but that date and the title come from unverified notes made by the Bain News Service, the New York agency whose photographers supplied news pictures to newspapers. George Grantham Bain assembled the collection, and its glass plates show how railroad accidents were recorded in the early twentieth century, when trains were the main way Americans moved between cities.
