A locomotive lying wrecked on the New Haven line is the subject of this glass negative, which the Bain News Service titled from its own caption cards, though the record does not confirm the location or date. The New Haven Railroad, formally the New York, New Haven and Hartford, was one of the largest carriers in New England during the early 1900s, and its trains carried heavy commuter and freight traffic between New York and Boston. George Grantham Bain's agency supplied newspapers with news photographs of accidents, disasters and public events, so pictures like this one often record how a wreck looked to the press shortly after it happened.
