Taken in Chicago in 1908, this view shows William Howard Taft, then Secretary of War, during the year he won the Republican presidential nomination at the party's convention in that city. Taft's campaign relied heavily on the railroad, as candidates of the period traveled by train and spoke at stops along the way. The picture comes from the Bain News Service, a New York agency whose glass negatives document much of the press photography of the early twentieth century. Glass plates like this one were the standard medium for newspaper photographers of the time.
