The Chicago & North Western Railway's passenger concourse in Chicago is the subject here, a large interior hall where travelers moved between trains and the city's streets. The railroad's downtown terminal was new in the years around 1911, and the company wanted its stations to look as impressive as the trains they served. The picture comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for commercial views of American cities, rail lines and resorts, which were sold as souvenirs and promotional material. Its vantage point on the open floor and high ceiling shows how such buildings were designed to handle crowds.
