Few stops on William Howard Taft's 1908 presidential campaign were as small as Redfield, a railroad town in South Dakota, where this picture shows the Republican candidate with his campaign train. Nominees of that era relied heavily on rail travel, so depots and station platforms became the setting for short speeches to crowds who had come to see them. The picture comes from the Bain News Service, a commercial photo agency whose glass negatives documented many such appearances. The record dates it to September 29, 1908, but notes that the title information is unverified.
