Labeled simply as a woman's train, this glass negative points to the separate accommodations some railroads set aside for women passengers, a practice that dates to the nineteenth century and drew both praise and criticism. The negative is part of the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that recorded much of American life and travel in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date or exact location, so the setting remains unconfirmed, but the plate offers a glimpse of how gender shaped everyday rail travel.
