Taft and Halvor Steenerson, a Minnesota congressman whose name the caption spells "Steenserson," appear together aboard a train in this 1908 glass negative. That year Taft was the Republican nominee for president, and campaigning by rail was the standard way for candidates to reach voters across a country that depended on trains for long-distance travel. The negative came from the Bain News Service, a New York press agency whose caption data was not always checked, so the names are worth confirming against other sources.
