This photoprint shows locomotive No. 999 posed in front of a Wagner Palace car, a pairing that reflects how railroads of the 1890s promoted their best equipment. No. 999 was a New York Central express engine, built in 1893 and famous as the lead locomotive of the Empire State Express, which was widely reported to have reached record speeds that year. Wagner Palace Car Company sleeping and parlor cars were the luxury stock of long-distance travel at the time, so the train was meant to advertise both speed and comfort. The record notes that the date and copyright attribution come from an old caption card and are unverified, so the exact year and photographer should be treated with some caution.
