The Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C., sits on the Tidal Basin and was dedicated in 1943, the bicentennial year of Thomas Jefferson's birth. Its interior is dominated by a bronze statue of Jefferson, a tall figure standing beneath a domed ceiling, with passages from his writings carved into the walls around it. The monument was designed by John Russell Pope in a neoclassical style meant to echo Jefferson's own architectural taste, and the inscriptions, including his words on independence and religious freedom, invite visitors to reflect on his ideas as much as his office.
