Under the open dome of the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C., a bronze statue of the third president stands about 19 feet tall, facing the viewer as the centerpiece of the rotunda. Sculptor Rudulph Evans created the figure, which was installed for the memorial's dedication on April 13, 1943, the 200th anniversary of Jefferson's birth. The building was designed to honor the author of the Declaration of Independence, and passages from his writings are carved into the surrounding walls. Visitors often notice how the statue's calm pose and the sunlight entering through the ceiling opening shape the space.
