Inside the rotunda of the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C., a bronze statue of Thomas Jefferson stands beneath a dome ringed by columns. The memorial, designed by architect John Russell Pope, was dedicated in 1943, the 200th anniversary of Jefferson's birth. Sculptor Rudulph Evans created the roughly 19-foot figure, and passages from Jefferson's writings are carved into the walls around it.
