Bronze figure of Thomas Jefferson, standing at the center of a domed rotunda, is the defining feature of this view. The setting matches the Jefferson Memorial on the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C., designed by architect John Russell Pope and dedicated in 1943, the 200th anniversary of Jefferson's birth. Pope modeled the domed form on the Pantheon in Rome, and the building honors Jefferson as the principal author of the Declaration of Independence and the third president. The ring of columns around the statue frames the figure and sets the tone of quiet reflection that visitors often remember.
