The bronze figure of Thomas Jefferson that stands at the center of the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C., is the focus here, along with the inscription carved into the walls around it. The memorial was dedicated in 1943, on the 200th anniversary of Jefferson's birth, and its design draws on the classical architecture he admired, especially the Pantheon in Rome. The words chosen for the walls come from his writings, including his 1776 declaration that all men are created equal, and they show how the nation chose to honor the author of the Declaration of Independence.
