Rising about 19 feet from its pedestal, this bronze Thomas Jefferson dominates the rotunda of the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C., beneath the open dome. The memorial was dedicated on April 13, 1943, the 200th anniversary of Jefferson's birth, and the statue was made by sculptor Rudulph Evans. Inscribed passages from Jefferson's writings line the walls around him, so visitors standing at his feet are surrounded by his own words on independence and religious liberty.
